What is Sonata ?
Making the internet human again
Sonata is a social media platform for independent thinkers who value human creativity. Bots aren’t welcome and it’s easy to filter them out of your feed.
While there's no censorship, you’re protected from exposure to harmful material. You can express yourself freely, with complete control over what you choose to see.
What makes Sonata different?
There are a number of key features which set Sonata apart from other social media platforms.
Channels give you control over the feed. Each post is sorted into a user-defined subject channel — politics, holidays, food, comedy or whatever — and you decide which ones to follow.
Amplification. There’s no censorship, but if you post socially unacceptable content, and keep doing it, the visibility of your posts will be temporarily limited. We’ll warn you when there’s a risk of restrictions and tell you if it happens.
Appeals. If you appeal, we won’t just ignore you. You’re kept informed on progress, not kept in the dark.
Channels
Interested in someone’s political views, but not their latest holiday photos?
With content sorted into channels, what you see is up to you, not the algorithm.
It allows you to express every aspect of yourself. Post about anything. Other users can decide for themselves which of your channels to follow.
Amplification
When you’re posting on Sonata, you have the freedom to speak. There’s no censorship.
Instead, amplification is a transparent way to either boost or temporarily limit your content’s visibility to other users. It’s down to the type of content you post.
If your content is likely to upset or offend people, we’ll tell you so.
If socially unacceptable content continues, a temporary restriction will be put on your account.
For a set period of time, and with a full explanation given, your content will be less visible to other users.
For details of content likely to cause restrictions, check out our amplification policy — but the following should give you a general picture:
Appeals
Sonata probably has the most transparent appeals system in the online world.
Firstly, every account limitation is temporary. Secondly, we can’t arbitrarily limit your visibility. Our moderators apply all content to clearly defined (and easily auditable) amplification rules which you can read here.
There’s no record of the websites you visit
Websites can’t leak or sell your sensitive data because they don’t see it
Passwave itself never sees your ID documents
If you appeal, you won’t be left hanging. While we’re making a decision on whether to uphold or reverse an account limitation, you’ll get updates throughout.
Social media without the robots
If you want to steer clear of the robots, you can. It’s all about choice.
Sonata users can choose to verify themselves as real people, or choose not to
If you want to avoid content from users who haven’t verified, it’s easy to filter it out
Sonata and Passwave
If you decide to verify as human, how is it done?
We’ve developed a reusable digital ID called Passwave. It protects your online privacy.
Passwave verification records the bare minimum of data. None of it gets logged.
Once verified, you can re-use your Passwave digital ID on any website which accepts it.
There’s no record of which websites you visit
No website can leak your sensitive, private data because they don’t see it
We keep our promises. All Passwave code is open to view, so you can see it for yourself.
When you sign up for Sonata, it’s your chance to get a Passwave ID and take control of your online privacy.
